Sponsored by Barossa Enterprises
Barossa Enterprises, has been helping regional South Australians living with disabilities for 45 years. It continues to provide work opportunities that are tailored to people’s individual support needs and job goals.
Well known opportunities include Supported Employment in its Nuriootpa production facility, and it also supports people into opportunities with local employers through job customisation.
Barossa Enterprises’ School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) helps young people who have recently left school or are in their final year, find sustainable employment. One shining example of the success is Riley Secomb, who recently found employment with Australia’s largest extruder and distributor of aluminium products, Capral Aluminium in Angaston.
Riley’s journey from school to employment at Capral showcases the opportunities available for school leavers through the SLES program. Initially, Riley joined Barossa Enterprises in 2022, commencing in Supported Employment. In 2023, he participated in the School Leaver Employment Supports program, undertaking various work experience opportunities. Subsequently, he successfully completed a Certificate II in Resources and Infrastructure Work Preparation, a program established and developed by Barossa Enterprises and accredited by TAFE.
He was an ideal candidate for the opportunity developed by Denni Mansfield, Barossa Enterprises’ Engagement Consultant and Robert Palmer, Capral Aluminium Extrusion Business Manager.
The collaboration between Barossa Enterprises and Capral Aluminium shows how customised employment focussing on a person’s strength can create opportunities that were previously overlooked. Through School Leaver Employment Supports, Capral welcomed Riley and another participant, offering them work experience, skills development and coaching. Impressed by their progress and dedication, Robert extended job opportunities to both individuals, highlighting the effectiveness of the partnership in preparing young people for the workforce.
“It’s been a pleasure working with these young men, and I’m very happy with their progress. This program is effectively helping them to enter the open workforce, and we’re proud to be a part of it,” says Glenn Haar, Capral Value Add Team Leader.
Capral Aluminium’s inclusive hiring practices made the process of job creation easier and helped further by the company’s commitment to supporting the local community. Capral values inclusivity and diversity in its workforce, supporting individuals like Riley who encounter obstacles to employment. The company recognises the contributions from individuals with disabilities when they are given the right opportunities.
The success of Riley at Capral reflects the positive outcomes that can be achieved through collaboration. As more businesses prioritise diversity and inclusion, they can access a wider pool of candidates with a little help from support organisations like Barossa Enterprises.
“Barossa Enterprises takes a holistic approach to supporting young people to achieve their job goals. We watch participants grow personally, skillfully, and socially throughout our programs,” says Barossa Enterprises Employment Services Manager, Barry Sims.
“We have witnessed participants achieve remarkable success, with some even starting their own small business,” says Barry.
Barossa Enterprises delivers its SLES program with a primary directive to support school leavers and create opportunities with them so they can flourish in their chosen work. Riley’s experience underscores the importance of tailored support and strong collaborative partnerships with prospective employers. Understanding a person helps develop a strength-based approach when assisting people to transition into employment.
